What Is the Bond Walkthrough Process in Hillsborough County?

Brancato Law Firm, P.A.
A bond walkthrough, also called a self-surrender or self-arrest, lets you turn yourself in on a warrant at the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office at 1201 Orient Road in Tampa, complete an abbreviated booking, post the bond a judge has already set, and leave the same day. It is available only on a bondable warrant, and you must arrive during walkthrough hours with the exact bond amount in cash or money order, or with a registered bail bond agent, plus a valid Florida ID. Done correctly, a walkthrough avoids being arrested at home or work, a holding cell, and a booking process that can take 8 to 12 hours or more.

I’m Rocky Brancato, founder of The Brancato Law Firm, P.A., a Tampa criminal defense firm. I have spent more than 25 years in the Hillsborough County criminal justice system, including as Chief Operations Officer of the Hillsborough County Public Defender’s Office, overseeing a staff of over 100. Today our attorneys coordinate bond walkthroughs at Orient Road for clients who learn that a warrant has been issued or that charges are coming.

What is a bond walkthrough?

A bond walkthrough is a prearranged, voluntary surrender on a warrant that already has a bond amount set by a judge. You report to the Sheriff’s Office, go through fingerprinting, a booking photo, and paperwork, post the bond, and walk out in a single visit.

The alternative is waiting to be arrested. That usually means handcuffs at home, at work, or during a traffic stop, a ride in a patrol car, and full intake at Orient Road Jail. A walkthrough puts you in control of the timing.

The walkthrough changes how you are booked, not whether you are booked. You still get an arrest record, a booking photo, and a court date. What changes is the experience, the time in custody, and your ability to plan around work and family.

Where and when do bond walkthroughs happen in Hillsborough County?

In our firm’s experience, bond walkthroughs in Hillsborough County are handled by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office at 1201 Orient Road, Tampa, FL 33619, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and not on weekends or holidays. Our attorneys confirm the current hours and procedures with HCSO before every walkthrough, because jail procedures change.

ItemWhat to know
LocationHillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, 1201 Orient Road, Tampa, FL 33619
DaysMonday through Friday; no weekends or holidays
Hours9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., in our experience; arrive as early as possible
BringValid Florida ID and the bond payment, or a bail bond agent waiting for you
Leave at homeWeapons, medical marijuana, vapes, unlabeled medication, and anything else that would be contraband in a jail

Arrive early in the day. Processing slows as the afternoon goes on, and arriving close to the cutoff risks being held overnight. Showing up outside walkthrough hours can mean being booked through the regular intake process, which is the experience a walkthrough is meant to avoid.

Who is eligible for a bond walkthrough?

You are eligible for a bond walkthrough only if your warrant is bondable, meaning a judge has already set a bond amount. Not every warrant qualifies, and Florida law keeps some people in custody until they see a judge.

SituationWalkthrough with same-day release?
Arrest warrant or capias with a bond amount set by the judgeUsually yes, if you bring the full bond
No-bond warrant, common in violation of probation and some serious felony casesNo; you will be held until a hearing
You are a registered sexual offender or sexual predator (other than a chapter 316 traffic misdemeanor charge)No; under section 903.046(2)(m), you are not eligible for bail until first appearance
Another agency or county has a hold or warrant on youPossibly not; the other hold can keep you in custody
You missed court and are surrendering on that caseYou can surrender, but you are no longer eligible for release on your own recognizance in that case

Two Florida laws drive most of these limits. Since January 1, 2024, section 903.011 has required a statewide uniform bond schedule, and it bars release before a first appearance hearing or bail determination for people arrested on a long list of charges, including any first- or second-degree felony, felony battery, domestic violence, and drug trafficking, and for people already on probation or pretrial release when arrested for a felony. When a judge has already set bond on the warrant, our attorneys can plan the surrender around that amount, which is a major reason our firm works to get bond addressed on the warrant before a client surrenders.

The second limit applies to missed court dates. Under section 903.046(2)(d), a defendant who failed to appear and later voluntarily surrenders is not eligible for a recognizance bond in that case. Our article on how to resolve a capias warrant before you are arrested explains the options when a missed court date is the reason for the warrant.

How do you pay the bond during a walkthrough?

You must have the full bond arranged before you walk in. If you cannot post bond, you will still be booked, but you will not be released, and you will be held at Orient Road or Falkenburg Road Jail until someone posts it.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office accepts cash bonds at 1201 Orient Road only in the exact amount, in cash or by money order. Credit and debit cards are not accepted, the person paying must bring a valid ID, and surety bonds are accepted only from registered bail bond agents.

Payment optionHow it worksWhat to watch for
CashPay the full bond in cashHCSO accepts cash bonds only in the exact amount
Money orderPay the full bond by money orderBuy it in advance for the exact amount; no credit or debit cards
Bail bond agentA registered agent posts a surety bond for youYou pay the agent a premium, typically 10 percent of the bond in our experience

A bail bond agent’s premium is set by the rates the surety files with Florida’s Office of Insurance Regulation, under section 648.33, and agents may also require collateral. For a cash bond, the Clerk may deduct unpaid court costs, fees, and fines from the refund when the case ends, so the person who posts cash should know the money may not all come back.

Checklist from The Brancato Law Firm, P.A. for a Hillsborough County bond walkthrough: confirm the warrant is bondable, arrange exact payment or a bondsman, bring Florida ID, and leave contraband at home

What should you bring and wear to a bond walkthrough?

Bring a valid Florida ID and nothing else you do not need. The walkthrough is designed to be quick, and anything that has to be searched, inventoried, or stored slows it down.

  • Dress simply. Wear clean, plain clothing. Skip hats, jewelry, belts, and accessories that will need to be removed.
  • Bring no contraband. That includes items that are legal for you outside a jail, such as medical marijuana, vape pens, and prescription medication outside its labeled bottle. You will be searched, and contraband can mean new charges and the loss of same-day release.
  • Bring no weapons of any kind. Leave firearms, knives, and pepper spray at home, not in your pocket or bag.

Our firm walks every client through what to bring and what to leave home before the surrender date, so nothing derails the process at the door.

What happens during the walkthrough?

During a walkthrough, you check in, go through an abbreviated booking with fingerprints, a booking photo, and paperwork on your bond conditions and court date, and then the bond is posted and you are released. HCSO also checks for other warrants or holds before you leave.

Why does avoiding time in jail matter for your case?

Time in custody affects more than your comfort. In a 2017 study of misdemeanor cases in Harris County, Texas, published in the Stanford Law Review, Paul Heaton, Sandra Mayson, and Megan Stevenson found that detained defendants were 25 percent more likely to plead guilty and 43 percent more likely to be sentenced to jail than similar defendants who were released, even after controlling for bail amount, offense, and criminal history.

Florida’s constitution starts from release. Under Article I, section 14 of the Florida Constitution, every person charged with a crime is entitled to pretrial release on reasonable conditions, unless charged with a capital or life offense where the proof of guilt is evident or the presumption great, or unless no conditions can protect the community, assure the person’s appearance, or protect the judicial process. In State v. Arthur, 390 So. 2d 717 (Fla. 1980), the Florida Supreme Court held that the State carries the burden of proof before bail can be denied under the capital and life-offense exception. In Thourtman v. Junior, 338 So. 3d 207 (Fla. 2022), the Court added that a judge may hold a defendant charged with such an offense for a reasonable time after first appearance to conduct that full bail hearing.

The volume in Hillsborough County is large. In 2020, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement recorded 32,519 arrests in Hillsborough County, 30,119 of them adults. A coordinated walkthrough is the most reliable way our firm knows to keep a client’s time on the inside of that system short.

How does an attorney make the walkthrough easier?

You do not need an attorney to do a bond walkthrough, but having one involved before you surrender removes most of the risk. These are the steps The Brancato Law Firm handles before a client walks in:

  1. Confirm the warrant and the bond. We verify that the warrant is bondable, confirm the exact amount on the day of surrender, and check for holds from other counties or agencies.
  2. Ask the court about bond when it is too high or not set. Where the law allows, we ask the judge to set or modify bond on the warrant before surrender.
  3. Coordinate payment. We arrange the bail bond agent or confirm the exact cash or money order amount.
  4. Schedule the surrender. We pick a weekday morning and tell you exactly when to arrive and what to bring.
  5. Protect you from questioning. Booking is not the time to talk about the case. With counsel on record, you know what to say and what not to say.
  6. Start the defense immediately. The walkthrough produces a court date. Our attorneys begin preparing for it before you leave the building.

For more about release hearings after surrender, read our guides on how a bond hearing works in Tampa and what to do after being arrested in Tampa.

What happens after the walkthrough?

After release, you will have a court date and bond conditions you must follow. Depending on the charge, conditions can include no contact with an alleged victim, travel limits, GPS monitoring, or drug testing, and violating any condition can lead to the bond being revoked.

Our firm reviews the conditions with each client before they leave Orient Road and begins working on the charges right away, so the defense is moving before the first hearing. If someone needs to check whether a person is still in custody, our Hillsborough County jail inmate search guide explains how.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do a bond walkthrough on a weekend in Hillsborough County?

No. In our experience, walkthroughs are handled Monday through Friday during daytime hours and not on weekends or holidays. If you surrender or are arrested on a weekend, you go through regular booking. Our firm schedules walkthroughs for weekday mornings to avoid that.

Can I use a credit card to post bond at Orient Road?

No. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office does not accept credit or debit cards for cash bonds. It accepts cash or a money order in the exact bond amount, or a surety bond from a registered bail bond agent.

Will a bond walkthrough show up on my record?

Yes. A walkthrough creates the same booking record as any arrest, including fingerprints and a booking photo. If the case is later dismissed, our attorneys can evaluate whether the record qualifies for sealing or expunction.

Can I do a walkthrough if I missed a court date?

Yes, if the capias has a bond set, but the rules are stricter. Under section 903.046(2)(d), a defendant who failed to appear and later surrenders is not eligible for a recognizance bond in that case, so expect a monetary bond. In some cases our firm can ask the court to address the capias before you surrender.

What if I have a no-bond warrant?

A no-bond warrant means you will be held until a judge decides release, so a same-day walkthrough release is not possible. Our attorneys can often schedule a prompt hearing and prepare the release argument before you surrender, which shortens the time in custody.
